Masters of the Universe - Ken Cope on He-Man rotoscoped stock footage

Ken Cope Most of the models were recruited from Gold's Gym on Sherman Way in Reseda, not far from the original studio where we worked on He Man. You can see that Bob Arkwright isn't all that tall, so the He Man and Skeletor models are far from the classic "8 to 8.5 heads tall" comic book proportions advocated in the 70s book, "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way". The roto reference for He Man was not used slavishly, but it did influence the stock footage, as we tried to refer to the motion and timing more than traced silhouettes. In the first season, some of the best artists worked on the stock footage at the beginning of the season. By the end of the season, that stock footage looked the worst, because we had all learned to draw and move the characters the way we wanted to. By season 2 of He Man, the stock is the least impressive of the any of the scenes with these characters.
