Mario is near the Toad Mario is further from the Toad The Toad is happy, as though relieved to see Mario The Toad is sad, as though concerned that he can't see Mario anymore The technical explanation for this is that the crystal and Toad within it change between a high-polygon and low-polygon version based on how close the camera, and thus Mario, is to them. It appears that the expression assigned to the high-polygon Toad is different than the low-polygon one, creating this effect. Every black hole in Super Mario Galaxy contains an image of Mario in Beach Bowl Galaxy, filtered and distorted beyond recognition alongside its outer edge.

In Super Mario Galaxy, the black holes have a smeared pattern of colors around their edges. This is actually an image, extremely heavily distorted and overlaid with a red filter. Extracting the image from the files shows that before the distortion, it shows a scene of what appears to be an early version of Beach Bowl Galaxy. Here is a recreation of the image (Mario has been superimposed over the screenshot). Why Beach Bowl Galaxy was chosen to be reflected in all black holes is unknown. Analyzing the internal naming, we can deduce that this hat was meant to be worn by a penguin. I have created a mock-up of what it may have looked like. In the files of Super Mario Galaxy, an unused model called "PenguinGoodsHat" can be found. It consists of a top hat containing a small penguin. Analyzing the intemal naming schemes for objects in the game, we can see that the word "goods" is used for accessories that optionally attach to the character. For example, the glasses wom by Blue foad are called "KinopioGoodsGlasses". In fact, there is another object that starts with "PenguinGoods": "PenguinGoodsSwimCap", an accessory wom by some penguins in Sea Slide Galaxy (see below). Thus, we can say with a high degree of confidence that "PenguinGoodsHat" was intended to be a hat wom by a penguin.
