Every black hole in Super Mario Galaxy contains an image of Mario in Beach Bowl Galaxy, filtered and distorted beyond recognition alongside its outer edge.

In Super Mario Galaxy, the black holes have a smeared pattern of colors around their edges. This is actually an image, extremely heavily distorted and overlaid with a red filter. Extracting the image from the files shows that before the distortion, it shows a scene of what appears to be an early version of Beach Bowl Galaxy. Here is a recreation of the image (Mario has been superimposed over the screenshot). Why Beach Bowl Galaxy was chosen to be reflected in all black holes is unknown.
