That results in a lot of death, and they need to keep the meat grinder back. So they need 30K men a month to just keep up with the losses, and it takes months for the wounded to recover to fight again (if they're not just send back to the front to die). The reported average casualty ratio is 3:1, which is pretty bad. Russians face horrific losses when they're on the offensive, but Ukraine also faces losses when they attack as well so it evens out to 3:1. I'd probably be very happy that I'd survived the Battle of Britain, since a lot of it happened over the area I grew up in due to it having one of the most important airfields in the South of England at the time.

My only real options during this period would be to either join the Navy at the height of the U-boat menace, being shipped off to Africa to fight the Italians or going to the utter fucking hell that was the Pacific/Burma campaign.

But I wouldn't know that at the time, so I'd probably be feeling tense but optimistic about things.
