As somebody that likes TLJ even with its massive flaws, the biggest problem of the Last Jedi's "Subversion of Expectations" is that there is not enough justifiable buildup to make you think, "I should have seen this coming," and instead, feels like the twist happens for the sake of catching the audience by surprise or to force the rest of the plot to happen.

Another thing is that when people dislike TLJ for being "too" different that's because the changes it makes to TFA and Episodes I-VI's characters are too abrupt to feel like the natural place these characters would be based on what we know about them, the time that has passed since we last saw them, and without having enough background to see the characters' events or development for their sudden change to make sense to the viewer.

For me it was the payout that broke me. Genuinely liked TFA, was VERY bothered with TLJ but giving them a chance because surely they have a plan, they're not crashing this franchise with no survivors, but RotP pretty much sucked any enjoyment I had in the first two installments, like that scene where Mr. Krabs makes a customer unwatch TV, because all that buildup had no payoff and the "twist" is almost a dead horse trope at this point.

And from both canon and Disney Marketing's POV, the message is clear: The legacy of the Skywalkers is dead, someone who got everything handed to them in a silver plate (although she had a shitty childhood I give her that) and not content with all of that, decides to also take the honorable Skywalker name and THE LARS FUKING HOMESTEAD to herself.

Help us, Jar Jar Binks. You're our only hope.
