You can be called an elitist, a d---, a mysoginist, nothing will strike this chord as much as being called a racist. And many people in France are still racist, even if covertly, but this word just has special power thanks to fourty years of brainwashing. And, iirc, French people were extremely shocked by the South African apatheid & Jim Crow laws in the 60s & 70s. Its so important here that, as a kid, I remember that being called a racist in school was the worst. You'd feel something in your stomach, as if you had done something very wrong, and pleaded a lot to be recognized as a non-racist (fearing both teachers & parents reprisals).
