: Furthermore, I think any high school drama nowadays that doesn't have queer characters is just a failure. 1 in 3 women in the UK aged 18-25 identify as part of the lgbt community, globally those numbers are only going to rise. The current generation (gen z) is gayer than ever and gen Alpha after us is going to be EVEN gayer. There is mo excuse to make a show catered towards the gayest generation ever without adding any gay characters. It has been for decades and has been used extensively in other media to portray or allude to being queer in any way. Same with the supernatural. In the 50s hollywood banned any positive representation of same-sex couples in their movies so people began making queer films with 'villains' as main casts, like that one lesbian movie where the protagonist is a vampire who preys on women. It was sthe only way to incorporate any form of queer representation in movies. Now I'm not saying that's good but it was distinctly shaped media, many disney villains as a resilt are heavily queer coded (Ursula was literally based on a drag queen but a lot of the others also have these elements that they get as a leftover from that area where villains were distinctly queer). As a result, for a lot of queer people the disney villains are often more relatable than the actual 'good' characters, they are often ostracized or excluded from their community, feared, seen as different and as a result do whatever they want and embrace it fully. These are all things that really speak to the queer community as a whole. A lot of us are still excluded, made fun of, made to feel different, etc. These themes are deeply rooted within our community and especially in a show like Wednesday that focuses on outcasts and them finding a place to belong should have queer rep since it's literally what so many of us are forced to do with chosen families.
