Kirby Super Star was a late SNES game, released at an awkward time in North America: six days before the launch of the Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64. This was also the month Crash Bandicoot was released, so it was easy for audiences to overlook this title.

Ultimately, Kirby Super Star's reception was generally positive, with positive reviews from sources like GamePro and Electronic Gaming Monthly, but it was clearly overshadowed outside of Japan. Of the 1.44 million copies of the game shipped, only 340 thousand were shipped outside of Japan. This was probably due in part to the game's fairly slow localization outside of Japan, where the game was available months before the N64 launch.
