About

Butterscotch is the name given to an anthropomorphic dog OC created by Peargor in late November, and who quickly became very popular on Twitter.

Origin

On November 30th, 2020, YouTuber and animator PEAR哥 uploaded No Mutt November [1], an animation of a shiba inu being comically transformed into a female anthropomorphic dog, in a parody of the Doge meme Go To Horny Jail (shown below). The video received over 1,150,000 views and 94,000 likes in 3 days. The same video, uploaded on November 29th on his Newgrounds account InfestedPear[2], was viewed more than 7000 times in 5 days and received a score of 4.4/5.

Spread

Following the viral success of his video, Pear uploaded a drawing of his new character on his Twitter account @Peargor on November 30th[3], followed by another on December 1st[4] in which he formally gave her an official name: Butterscotch. These tweets gained over 16,000 and 28,900 likes, respectively, in 4 days, while the second drawing, posted on December 2nd on Youtube[5], gained 31000 upvotes in 3 days.

After she was given a name, Butterscotch grew popular to the point where many Twitter artists started to share fanarts of her. Among the most popular are FPV's tweets on December 3rd[6][7], which gained 1,700 and 3,000 likes in less than 48 hours, and DinoBoi's tweet of a posing Butterscotch on December 1st [8] with 650 likes in 4 days (shown below).
