Matthew Stover is just one of those writers. Just read Dooku last moments: "As he looks up into the eyes of Anakin Skywalker for the final time, Count Dooku knows that he has been deceived not just today, but for many, many years. First but not, he knows, the last." - Revenge of the Sith novelisation, by Matthew Stover, pages 81-82 Palpatine has set the stage and had convinced Dooku that this was just another act in the play. Grievous kidnapping the Supreme Chancellor, and holding him captive aboard the Invisible Hand. The Jedi coming to his rescue, and Dooku meeting them. Eventually, after giving them a good fight, surrendering, being taken captive, able thereafter to negotiate an end to the war with the Supreme Chancellor, allowing the CIS a victory they could not claim on the battlefield. It was, as the book notes, a trap: but the Jedi were not the targets of the trap, but the bait. Dooku was the target: a piece on the board that Palpatine needed to be removed. He was the counterpoint to Grievous: controlled, refined, powerful, reasonable. Once Palpatine removed him from play, he could push the Senate to grant him further powers: the powers needed to stop the dangerous rampage of Grievous, who would prosecute aggressive war unrestrained by the more intelligent Dooku. Of course, the genius of it all was that Dooku did not know he was a pawn to be sacrificed until the very end: he saw himself as a major piece, one that would shatter the board and the game if removed. He hadn't realised that Palpatine was only using him to get to Anakin, and to push the war the way he wanted it to go. Treachery is the way of the Sith. Dooku forgot this, but was nonetheless a victim to it.
