>NEW homes
>Gas connections (to the grid)
>AUSTRALIA (not America)
Whoah, construction permits get updated over time to cut out outdated building techniques and technology, who fucking knew! And you can still get your own propane tanks if you really NEED to cook with gas.
Main reason in the end is: with electric heating becoming more common, gas infrastructure isn't really built out anymore. It's all nice and well if you could in theory have a home with a gas connection… but what are you gonna connect it to when the infrastructure no longer exists? The few people that rely on gas cooking just doesn't justify the entire infrastructure and the corresponding costs.
Gas used to be used for cooking, for heating and for even drying clothes.
But nowadays in many places of the world both drying clothes and heating has moved to fully electrical. (IIRC the US is the last holdout of gas based clothes drying). So why have this MASSIVE infrastructure if it only serves the relative handful of people that NEED gas cooking for specific dishes? Especially if it's also a regular worry of fires, gas poisoning and even gas explosions being a constant headache for authorities that they'd rather remove if they can.
It's just a prelude to dismantling the gas network entirely: prevent new connections before getting rid of old connections (as you renovate old buildings).

Hm.
(Not to mention, regardless of country, this is STILL not taking away anyone's existing stoves, which I thought was the central boogieman of that.)
