I speculate that this is likely a very cheap way to disable sliding on tightropes, which is then hidden from the player by not putting any slopes in that level. BAB BB In New Super Mario Bros., Mario can normally slide on most sloped surfaces. However, the moment a tightrope is placed in a level, he can no longer slide at all. Speculation: While we cannot know the intent of the programmers, this appears to a very cheap trick to disable sliding on tightropes, which would be unrealistic and undesirable. Since Mario slides on sloped surfaces by default, any non-slidable surface must be specifically programmed to be such. However, by simply disabling sliding, this is accomplished in a much more expedient way. The evidence of this being intentional is this: obviously, since it disables all sliding, it must be masked from the player by not using any slopes in that level.
