Women cannot drink Witcher potions because females cannot survive the Trial of the Grasses. Barely any males can. Ciri was trained briefly in combat by the Witchers at Kaer Morhen, but mostly because they had no idea how else to raise a child. They gave her herbs to enhance her strength, but they never gave her the mutagens. I say she was trained briefly because when she reached puberty, the guys similarly had no idea what to do with a teenage girl, and given that her uncontrolable magical powers started manifesting at the same time, Geralt asked Triss for help, but there wasn't much she could do either. She was then briefly taken in by Yenn and trained in magic, largely unsuccessfully. No more Witcher training. Ciri IS skilled in swordsmanship, as evidenced by her time surviving in the Rats, but she is neither a Witcher nor a Witch. She's Hen Ichaer, a universe-traveling elf-blood that is a conduit of raw magic, which is why she cannot use Witcher signs either despite repeated attempts to teach her. Perhaps even more importantly, after Geralt and Yenn's deaths, Ciri dips out of the entire Witcher universe and into that of Arthurian legend in disgust with her home world. She doesn't just leave the Continent, she leaves the entire damned setting. If you really "need" female Witchers (you don't), a far less egregious retcon would be that the Cat school figured it out or that such a unique mutagen process was lost by the time the Saga began, as it was for the Wolf school's along with Vesemir. I would still think it's stupid, but FAR less stupid than just reskinning Geralt as Ciri and whatever b------- excuse they end up giving for why an adult woman can become a Witcher (spoiler alert: "It's Elder Blood, I ain't gotta explain s---" will be the excuse). If we're playing as Ciri then that means 1) signs: out 2) sword styles: out 3) potions: out, in which case it's not a Witcher game, it's a cash-grab. I love this dysfunctional fictional family of misfits. It's my favourite fantasy setting just because I love these characters and their dynamic so much. Even in a post where I said in the first line that I don't care about Ciri looking older in TW4 and then just explain the lore issues I have received now, within hours, hundreds of one of the following responses: "1. You're a man (often from people with trans flags which is very amusing), 2. You're an incel and more astonishingly, PDF, 3. You're a tourist/casual, 4. it's just a stupid fantasy game why do you care?, 5. It's not even out yet, you have to eat the turd before you critique anything about it." Going from Yenn calling Ciri ugly to weeping and holding her after thinking she was dead and saying "my little ugly one" is so powerful. It's just a sad story about a broken family trying desperately to find each other in the chaos of war. If you can find the time, please read or listen to the Witcher books. They're not high art. They're highly disturbing in many ways, but the underlying narrative of family is always there, be it with Yenn, Geralt & Ciri or the Hansa or even the Rats, sorta. It's such a good story about family and friendship that the magic and monster slaying really falls by the wayside.
