DBZ Kai aired in Japan first and the violence was left mostly in tact, the filler was just cut out. Nickelodeon got the rights to air it and decided to edit all the fight scenes. I see people complaining about Kai all the time, but that's not the series's fault, it's Nickelodeon. It's like 4Kids editing the crap out of One Piece. The japanese cut of Kai was pretty rad and exactly what it needed to be: DBZ without all the slow-pans and redundant speeches.

And according to quick Wikipedia research, the DVDs of Kai contain uncut English dubs, so you're really getting the best DBZ experience that way.
