Fun fact: The reason why the "u" is removed from those words is because when the printing press was first being put into use in order to save ink and space on the page printers would remove “useless” letters. Then people would learn to read and write reading the “missed spelled” words and it just kind of stuck. That’s the cause for pretty much all difference in the spelling of words between American English and English English.
