I imagine the concept of sleep is so totally alien to the gems that Pearl, the gem who is most analytically minded, must find it fascinating. It'd be like us looking at some animal behavior that seems to us to serve no real function and thus makes us really curious about it.

That, or Pearl is just a creepizoid.
