Back in ancient times salt actually had a "range" of saltiness that could be achieved due to the fact that it was incredibly difficult to purify the salt to the extent we do today, therefore it was possible for a container of salt to "lose" its saltiness by having water wash the salt out of the mixture, leaving what was essentially dirt behind.
