![A Portrait Of A Young Woman March 25, 2015 Stacy Washington There has been a lot of talk about what GamerGate is, and what it isn't. A lot of voices have been thrown into the fray. But more often, people are overlooked by the shouting. Voices that are just as valid, just as thought provoking. and just as beautiful as the rest. Recently, I met one of these voices. Someone who messaged me after reading an article of mine. For her sake, I've promised to keep her completely anonymous. This is a promise I intend to keep, so vagueness may be a frustrating key factor in this article, but she deserves her dignity and I will keep that intact. She's in her 20s. A lesbian. A supporter of the LGBTQ movement, as one may guess, she is also a supporter of GamerGate. She has a good sense of humour, and she is incredibly loyal. She tweeted at me after reading my article about what happened during the account switch. She, too, had suffered abuse during her younger years and identified with some of whatI wrote about my childhood trauma For me that was enough. I followed her immediately and told her she could message me any time, day or night, if she ever wanted to talk. And since then I have come to adore her. She is a strong young woman, though l imagine she would disagree with me. In fact, I imagine even as she's reading this she's disagreeing with me. But I know inner strength, and I see a lot of it in her. Though right now she's going through a rough time She has had long standing abuse from people that she trusted, people that were supposed to care for her. Her parents abused her deeply, leaving burn scars on her body. To add to that, another trusted person, a teacher (and I can't believe I'm saying that as a teacher myself) blinded her in one eye. She deals with this trauma every day, and I can see it, in the way she talks, in the actions we discuss, there is a long standing issue there. Though l am not a doctor, I imagine it is post traumatic stress disorder. But things aren't so simple, and not everyone can go see a doctor just because they have a condition that needs to be seen. The last few months have been hard, dealing with her own traum ad having to help take care of her girlfriend who also suffers from anxiety. This is a full time job, keeping herself well enough to keep her life together and going, and being strong for the person she loves. So gaming is a way to help that. Gaming and her significant other. Yet with GamerGae, even the gaming community has become a minefield. When GaymerX began using the block list and the blockbot, it was like a blow to her. And who could blame her? She was a lesbian. She was a gamer. And someone she admired had just more or less blocked her and told her she didn't belong any longer. A lifetime of this, as we all know not everyone is kind to those in the LGBT community, and now told again by the same people that are supposed to accept her, she didn't belong When she reached out to me about her experiences of abuse and trauma, I have to admit my heart broke. I immediately adopted her as a younger sister. I kind of do this, as a lot of people who have known me for years know. And so when I heard that she was also suffering from medical issues that could be treated should she have the money, I immediately wanted to spring into action. Yet... we realised we couldn't. Gaae has gotten such a bad rap over the past six months that even if she were to put something up on Gofundme or something along those lines, it would go nowhere, and quite possibly be harassed down. It would be called out, because she's a GamerGater. It doesn't matter she's just one out of many. It doesn't matter it's a legitimate medical need. It doesn't matter that she's a human being that deserves love and compassion like we all do. She's a GamerGater. Which mean she deserves hate. I'm not going to lie, I started crying. I was so angry I began to cry. I turned to Adam and I just started yelling about how utterly wrong this was. How sick this was. Because she believed in something that was just political, she was turned into a demon, and in some ways having to relive trauma because of that. A wonderful, sweet, kind young woman who was just another cis white male, right? Just another s--- lord that deserved hate? This is what GamerGate is. These are the people that GamerGate are. They're not the same. They're not one face They're not one voice. Tonight I'm sick to my stomach with just the horror of what this means, that real people, that real lives, are effected because a few dozen pe bad guy because she is sticking to what she believes in.
