DLC doesn’t inherently HAVE to be free. Expansion packs back in the day were DLC prior to the online era, and that's what DLC took the place of since it was easier. People just have an unfair negative mentality about DLC because of how its been abused.

This is just a luxury Nintendo is offering us for this particular game, largely due to the lack of content at launch.
