He devotes a lot of time to his worldbuilding and plots, but at the same time lets us go off the rails. Though, he makes it clear that if we do something stupid, we will see consequences So the wizard has been pretty under control for most of the game, but now that we are higher levels his divination powers are finally getting strong enough to do what he was planning for all along. And we get to the next dungeon, a fun smash and grab treasure run dungeoncrawl in-between plot advancement stuff. And our diviner wizard takes this opportunity to show off his magidick as hard as he can He prepares nothing but divination spells, anything he has, and starts casting them in rapid succession. What monsters are there? Are there any traps in the first room, if so what are they and where? Yadda yadda. He even went so far as to asking about what TREASURE we would find, per room/encounter, so that he would know if any of it was cursed and if it was worth going into that part of the dungeon at all to get it And when he ran out of spells, he settled down to rest. Since any spell slot that he couldn't fill with divination spells he left blank for that day? He didnt even have basic lower level attack or defense spells, so once his divinations were out he was basically just a high level commoner. So useless that the rest of the party had no choice but to either go one without him and leave him behind, or wait and let him rest to get his spells back. His excuse was "that dungeon has been there for 400 years, so, so what is another few days?" It got to the point that he was "drawing a map of the dungeon based on his detailed divinations, laying out room structure and traps and encounters* The whole time, he is talking with the clericbro, the only other caster in the party, about exactly what spells they should prepare and cast to handle everything in advance Poison gas? Wind wall or gust of wind, pick one. Ice Elemental? Lets make sure we have enough fire. Etc Now, at first, the GM was giving evasive answers because he was not at all on board for this. He had planned a dungeoncrawl, not a back-to-back 20 questions tourney But, once he saw that the wizard was drawing a freaking map, he could just see all traces of Giving a F--- drain from his face. After that, he started telling the wizard, in full detail, everything he asked to know in his divinations That should have been our clue to stop the wizard So, eventually, after multiple in-game days the Wizard feels satisfied with his answers, uses his remaining divination spells for the day to double check some parts of his map, and starts finalizing plans for how we are going to beat this dungeon By now? It has been like an hour and a half of the rest of the party sitting on our asses, waiting to actually do something. I played a ninja, so I was our trap guy, so at least I was getting useful trap information and he would ask me questions and s---. The monk and the paladin were pretty much left in the dust, though, and getting bored as f---. So, finally, with all of that autism over we can actually get starting playing the freaking game And the GM immediately timeskips. "So, on your way back from the dungeon with all of your treasure..." We never got to make a single roll. Shitfit ensues
