Here's another Black ROM compiled by someone smarter than me. This revision of the game allows you to progress pretty far in terms of story events, as everything is at least semi-functional until just before Opelucid City. It suffers from heavy slowdown, though, and even worse, crashes at the slightest nudge, hence the frequent cuts.
