Thinking of getting back into writing

So yeah dumb me forgot we've got a forum for this sort of stuff, heh heh.

Basically I'm trying to get back into writing. I used to write stories back in high school, but those stories have not aged well at all. Mostly sci-fi stories with some horror-like elements that I'm no longer proud of, as they were pretty sloppy (too many unnecessary twists, more characters than I could handle, etc). Now I'm considering writing more stuff that actually feels like it's worth a quick read, so for now mostly one-shot stories rather than multi-chapter ones. I will be upfront and say I've already gone ahead and written one story so far… but it's paraphilia related, so I get the feeling not many of you will be interested in that (if you actually are though it might be best to private message me about it). Other ideas I've got include a humor story where Gamergate is reimagined as a video game plot (it's just meant to be for laughs and not to be taken seriously), another humor story inspired by Captain N, and yes more paraphilia stuff. Hey at least I'm trying to do a mix of both in order to keep things interesting, heh heh.

So yeah, this is my shameless "self promotion" topic just wanting to see if anyone's actually got any interest in checking any of these future stories out. I'll even post rough drafts in order to get some critique on where to make major improvements.

I can help critique as i do love myself some sci fi and horror espicially if some humor is added in (i've read all the Yahtzee croshaw books and loved them) so i'm happy to oblige

Thanks, once I get around to writing one of those (I have a basic idea for something in mind, kinda going for an Alien or Dead Space inspiration on it) I can send you a rough draft so I can find out what kind of stuff to fix.

Sounds interesting enough, I can review your work if you need any editors/critics.

Thanks! I need to ask now though, do you mean ANY sort of story, or would you prefer to avoid the paraphilia related stories? I need to know this now since I'd hate to send someone a link to something that'd only squick them out. (remember I said I kinda want to alternate between both types, as the paraphilia ones can act as a fun way to do the kind of ideas I've wanted to do in artwork but never could due to how bad my drawing skills are, while the non-paraphilia ones can act as a way to really stretch my legs on trying genres and possibly more serious attempts at writing [that's not to say the paraphilia ones won't be taken seriously, I mean heck if I'm gonna write "fap material" I want it to be something people actually find worth reading when they;re in the mood])

I wanna check 'em out! :D I'mma writer too!
Thing is, I have a serious motivation problem… Either I'll be procrastinating, or I'll be daydreaming all day, super pumped to write and then when I sit down to do it I lose interest…. Or I start things only to never finish…. Or when I try to write I just have no motivation and I'll stop at a few words….

This lack of motivation isn't exclusive to me trying to write either… I think I kinda have a problem….

… Never mind me. Like I said earlier, I want to read your stories. Not nessacarily(I can just feel I butchered that word) a specific story, I'm just generally interested.Though I have no idea what kinda parafilia you're into, so I'm not sure if I want to read any of those….

Thanks! And oh I hear ya on the motivation, sometimes it's pretty fleeting. This is why it's always more convenient to happen when I'm not doing anything else, heh heh.

So yeah I will need to know now, do you want me to share with you any type of story, or stick to ones that are non-paraphilia? As I said above I do not want to send someone a link to a story that will only make them go "oh ew, I didn't want to read this!" I will say right now the one paraphilia story that has been finished is non-pornographic, and it's related to body inflation. If that's you're kink then hey I'll link if you want, but if it's not then I'll just wait until I have a story ready that's not of the "expressing my deep dark fantasies for all too see!" variety.

I'm thinking the first "normal story" I'll have done could be either the Captain N inspired one or the "Gamergate reimagined as a video game" humor story, kinda depends on what material I can come up with.

Mmmm…. Inflation doesn't really gross me out, but it's not my really my thing either. So, just the non-paraphillia stories then.

Other ideas I’ve got include a humor story where Gamergate is reimagined as a video game plot

Rule #1 (amongst many other Rule #1s) of writing is "no filibusters." Turning what should be a creative endeavor into an opinion piece only screws up otherwise-good series (Maximum Ride), pushes iffy writing into bad territory (His Dark Materials), and puts the final nail into the coffin of bad works (anything by Ayn Rand). While there are certainly quite a few good novels that contain opinions/social commentary/etc., they put any messages second to actually telling a story.

You have to consider your hypothetical audience; you're writing for them as much as you are yourself. What do they think about GG? Do they even know GG exists in the first place? Whe people read your work, anti-GG people will get angry (obviously), people who don't know about GG will simply be confused, and even pro-GG people still might get irritated because they feel like they're being preached to.

If you want an example of the last situation, consider Maximum Ride (the worst example of opinions ruining a work ever, imo). For three books, Maximum Ride was an urban sci-fi dramedy about kids with wings, but in the fourth book, the series leaped enthusiastically over the shark. The next several books devolved the series into a lengthy diatribe about global warming, and mangled the characters into mouthpieces for James Patterson's views. This swerve turned off even readers with environmentalist leanings, and everybody ditched the series. You'd be hard-pressed to find any fan of the series who acknowledges anything from the fourth book onwards as canon.

tl;dr put plot before opinion, concentrate on novel (huh huh) ideas and characters that readers will enjoy before anything else

Alright, thanks for letting me know!

I guess I should say this then: specify what kind of stories you want me to link you. The "normal stories" will likely just be linked via this topic, but paraphilia stories will need to be through private messaging in order to prevent users who do not want to see that stuff from clicking on accident.

Oh of course. My idea for the whole thing is a really silly story where the whole situation is treated in a very lighthearted and humorous manner, one where the whole situation is one people can laugh at rather than treat as a serious opinionated story.

Now granted I'll need to be careful with it, sure, but yes I do believe it should be a story where the plot takes precedent over a message of some kind. As such, now that I think about it, I'm guess the Captain N inspired story will come first. That way I can do a gaming humor story without worrying about certain groups getting angry.

Eh, I think I'll be good with the stories you link on this topic, but I might change my mind later on. :3

Heh heh, like I said, if you have any interest in those then private message me. Meanwhile normal stories will be more public for all to read (well okay everything's being posted to a deviantArt account for the time being, but I mean the "normal stories" will have links to them posted publicly).

Here's hoping I don't pull a Valve and end up taking forever with any of the stories! (given I'm only writing one-off stories rather than any long chapter based ones it might not be an issue)

I'm always available to read whatever, just send me a link if you need assistance on your works. Writing is an art that cannot be perfected without feedback.

Went ahead and sent you the link to the one finished story!

Hoping it won't be too terribly long before I have enough of an idea of how to go about doing my next story.

I'm still iffy about it. It's a risky idea, and risk isn't something any aspiring writer needs.

The Captain N thing sounds interesting, though. If I were you, I'd make up some completely original video game characters to populate the world with. Old video game characters like Link and Mega Man tend to not have much personality, so you'd end up mostly building their characterization from the ground up. You might as well just make them wholly original in that case. (Plus, no copyright nonsense!)

Yep that was my idea as well, just make up characters that, while original, it's still clear what kind of game they'd be from (like Wreck-It-Ralph's original characters, even without knowing what his game is it was clear Ralph is a Donkey Kong inspired 80s arcade game character). Might even though in a thinly-veiled parody or two just for the heck of it if I think it can actually get a laugh.

I'll gladly read your stories, paraphillia or not.

Thanks! I'll send you the link to the one paraphilia story I have finished via a private message, and you can just reply back to that message with your feedback and critique.

No Original Names wrote:

You know what, screw it. You can send me the paraphilia stories if they get too much i'll just say, i still want though sci fi ones though.

Alright, I'll private message the one paraphilia story I've finished, but yeah if it's really not to your liking then you can just stop reading and tell me "eh sorry, really just can't get into it."

Yeah yeah for sure, I'll certainly send you a rough draft of the sci-fi story once I've got the draft completed at some point (again I'm not giving any "release dates" since I don't want to promise something for a specific point in time and then only end up pulling a Duke Nukem Forever styled delay).
