My internet adventure.

About two months ago my mother blocked KnowYourMeme for various reasons (It's actually still blocked, I'm using another computer right now but that's not the point.)

After she restricted me from this website I decided to try out a few other websites so I'd still have a place to post memes and stuff.

I tried out sites including 9gag.com (pile of shit), QuickMeme.com (basic as shit), Reddit (eh…), and after a few more sites, I finally settled down on a popular website entitled FunnyJunk.com.

After a few days on there I decided to make an account and try to get the know the people of this community. I have to say, Everyone will be really hard on you if you are a newcomer. I uploaded a few of my most popular pics from KYM and on FJ they all got so many dislikes I ended up taking them down. Apparently you have to work your way up to everyone liking you.

They have these FJ "points", if you do something that people like, you get a point. The more points you get, the more things you can do. Ex: If you get (i think) 55 points you can post pictures in comments, if not you can only post text, which I think is bullshit, apparently they do this so only the funniest of the funniest end up on their site.

And let me tell you this communities definition of "funny".
Racism = funny
Sexism = funny
Extreme violence = Funny

I also found out that once you make an account you gain access to the NSFW content. But don't think you'll be fapping to any of this stuff, I swear they probably rip all that stuff off of 4chan.

This website has done nothing but mentally scar me and make me feel like an unfunny loser, and I've only been on there for about four weeks.

Way to go internet.

Moral of the story: KYM is the best website on the internet.

By the way don't expect me to be posting anything for a few more weeks. FML. ~Lea

There's a reason I spent more time on smaller forums in my internet history. Friendliness and maturity tends to be inversely proportional to community size. The bigger the forum, the less welcoming it is.

Also going to forums that appeal more to mature adults helps a lot too. 9gag and Funnyjunk are kids websites. They are geared towards and populated by internet noobs in their first year of high school and the general attitudes of schoolyard playgrounds dominate those places

I'd agree that KYM has a more warming forum community (emphasis on forum) than other popular sites. The comment section can generally be less warming to newcomers.

True.

False.

Negative Nancy.

Also @OP

Why would your mom block KYM?

Still better than reddit.

I think KYM is more welcoming is because it has a lower percentage of people using the site.

To put into perspective just how immature FJ is, I frequented that website often when I was in 6th grade aka 11 years old (although I only looked at images, I didn't make an account or interact with anyone). Yeah, you most likely won't find the most scholarly minds on that site.

KYM has a great community, but I have felt welcome on other forums as well. If I may make a suggestion: based on the Naruto avatar you had earlier, I take it you like anime/manga. It's not the best for looking up memetic images, seeing as it's a manga site, but Onemanga.com has great forums and the members are generally friendly towards newcomers. I don't think the forums support textile embedding like KYM does, but if it's friendly interaction you want (at least while you wait for your mom to unblock KYM) then this would be my first suggestion.

@Gamzee: Lea's mom blocked KYM because there was a whole problem with her school catching her using the site during class and deeming it "inappropriate". Lea's mom could be blocking it just to keep her from being distracted from school work and whatnot.

Lea, about the blocking of the website on your computer…
You should tell your mother what it is actually about. Tell her that it isn't a site of porn, it's a site for documenting the latest or archive the oldest of fads from across the internet. If she doesn't believe you, show her a few articles. Also tell her that it is like a Wikipedia for the internet (I mean for the internet).
I suggest a few like these:

  • Never Gonna Give You Up
  • Over 9000
  • Gangnam Style
  • Advice Dog (make sure you warn her that this may contain [some] bad language)
  • Duckroll

You should note that whoever assumed that this was a site for porn is overreacting. Seriously, when have we ever showed porn on this site? (Besides a few JFF threads, but I'm implying most of KYM)

And seriously, you're 13 (if I recall from the thread you posted a few months ago). Your mother should know that 13 year old teenagers are going to learn about some inappropriate things sooner or later.
(That happened to me. When I was 10. I lost my innocence--supposedly--because I searched up the word "boobs". That was when I searched it up on YouTube. I don't think I had necessarily my innocence taken.)

You can visit my "backdoor" anytime, Nats.

Since when do software filters ever stop kids from accessing whatever they want? If you're running Windows (and, statistically, you most likely are), it's trivial to break into the administrator account and just remove the filter altogether. But if you're up to it, try out a bootable flash drive with a Linux distro on it. Might I recommend BackTrack 5 (if you have to have Windows and just want to grab the administrator password and use it) or Ubuntu 12.10 (if you don't mind using a different UI and learning some commands)?

This post in a nutshell: It's not hard to access whatever you want, all you have to do is do this, that then this again, then that again while using this to do that while doing the other thing…

But seriously, if Lea wants to break free from the blocks, that's an option, but I'd not bother, personally…

Instead of going to the scholarly minds at Reddit, 9gag, and FJ, I'd reccomend that you go to Tumblr.

If you envision Twitter and 4Chan having a drugged up baby you've got a pretty good idea of it.

What in God's name possessed you to go to 9gag? That site is the genesis of faggotry!!!

There's a lot wrong with 9gag, don't get me wrong. But you can't blame the membership – not to sound like an Internet elitist, but a good deal of the 9gag userbase consists of Internet chumps, people who don't understand what a may-may is or why certain jokes are or are not funny or which ones have been beaten to death. There was that whole shebang on 4chan and reddit (we talked about it a bit here, as well) that you probably saw about the whole "Le 9gag Meme Stealer-and-Ruiner-o-Matic 9001," so 9gag does kinda suck and should be banished from the Internet, but it's not the members' fault. It's not the fault of the guy who just wants to look at some pictures of cats with Impact font captions. If that's all he wants out of the Internet, fine. He's not enjoying it to its full potential, sure, but he'll get a good laugh and forget about it. It wouldn't make any difference if he saw the same picture in its original post on reddit or 4chan or FJ or anywhere it may have originated.

It's not "the genesis of faggotry." It's hella full of faggotry, but I wouldn't immediately rage against a 9gag user unless I knew they were blatantly ripping off or claiming content (yes, I'm aware that a lot of them do). I'm not defending 9gag, its creators or its methods, just its somewhat oblivious userbase.

Decent points on your part. That's understandable. It's not as bad as spamming "Arrow to the knee" or "le" absentmindedly.

My mother did not block KYM because she thought it was bad, we have a very bad relationship as a family and she tends to block things / take things away when she gets angry at me.

I'm sorry to hear that, but you appear to be back on KYM, so, all's sort of well that ends sort of well, I guess.
