Does anyone know this? I know it was coined by Dawkins and everything. But some years ago nobody would have talked about "memes" but maybe rather of funny videos or funny pictures or something like that. Or am I wrong? If I'm right, does anyone know a year or event when the word of the meme spread? Thank you!

Like you said, you didn't know they where memes, you just thought of them as funny pics and vidyas.
As I get older and more into internet culture, I know more about it than most people I see IRL. There is still a lot of people that see memes on Facebook and have no idea what a meme is or what it's about.
Now it's just more popular because everyfag (every 12 year old) thinks he is a 1337 troll, hurr durr, I am in with the cool kids, 9gag army 4eveh, lol, #yolo swag.
Thank you!
But you don't know who exactly started applying the term on internet phenomena, do you?
