There's already a submission, (think it was deadpooled at some point, but was brought back) but it is quite lacking in information. As pew pew pew is quite popular, we should probably either revisit the existing entry or start from scratch.

I agree. The last time it was my position that Pew Pew Pew was too common of an onomatopoeia to be called a meme, but I'm not so dead set on that anymore.

Not sure where to begin with it though.

I have seen it enough to think it constitutes as an internet meme, BUT i honestly don't know how we are going to proceed with this one. Its going to be really tough to find an origin on the internet

Also, CONTRIBUTING!

http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/8ig9f/pew_pew_pew_pic/ – if you find "castrated" on this page, you'll find a discussion of pew pew's origins. Inconclusive, but interesting. (for the record, I remember this in CS long before WoW was around.)

http://www.geekologie.com/2009/03/pew_pew_man_holds_woman_hostag.php – love this story. Pics related.

Do a Google Insights search for the terms "pew pew," "pew pew pew," and pew laser (with quotes on the first two, without commas). It's an interesting chart that shows "pew pew" on the scene with a steady rise, and "pew pew pew" coming on simultaneously with pew and the mention of lasers.

Anyway, I'll cast this out there and you guys can gauge the relevance.

I don't think the origin is that important in this case. I know for a fact that as an onomatopoeia for what lasers do, Pew Pew Pew goes back pre-internet. It's just a sound people make.

But there is something very internet-specific behind these Pew Pew trends.

So the question is, what happened in 2005 to make everyone go pew pew?

Well, in 2005 Bush was re-elected (he always had a way with words, I bet there was a captioned picture somewhere…), North Korea announced that they had nukes. We got a new Pope (remember all the pictures with the pope having lazer eye-beams?), Hurricane Katrina happened (maybe relevant, idunno), and the War on Terror was in full swing.

There's plenty of opportunities for lazer/pew-pew-pew to gain popularity.

This is the most research I've done for anything, school included. I'm proud.
