Baby Godfather is an image macro series featuring a scowling baby dressed in a tuxedo with a bow-tie pointing to the ground with his index finger. The captions typically portray the baby as an infant version of Don Corleone, a fictional mafia boss character in Mario Puzo’s novel and Francis Coppola’s film adaptation The Godfather.
Parodies of mafia cliches have been in existence for decades in pop culture. On YouTube, there are numerous home movies of babies titled “baby godfather.” The original image of the baby in tuxedo was first posted by Redditor timekeepsgoing in a thread titled “Reddit, I’ve seen the way you do it….Will you do it again??” on February 22nd, 2011. The thread was positively received by the community and led to a number of photoshopped images:
On the same day, the earliest instance of Baby Godfather was uploaded via Quickmeme (left), but the series didn’t get featured on the homepage until September 11th (right), which featured a variation of Don Corleone’s quote from The Godfather III.
Baby Godfather has since spread to Buzzfeed, Memebase, Runt of the Web and FunnyJunk. The image macros have also spread among Polish internet users and dozens of Polish iterations can be found on MemeGenerator.
