Babby is a photoshop meme based on a studio portrait of a chubby baby whose face is superimposed into other base images of various contexts. The name “Babby” is derived from the widely mocked Yahoo Answers! question “How is Babby Formed?”.
According to an unconfirmed tip from Todd Bushman, who claims that the studio portrait was taken of him as a baby in December 1977, the image was first uploaded online via his Facebook profile in September 2008. However, the photograph remained hidden from public view until he decided to submit it to the awkward family photo-style blog Sexy People sometime in 2009 (shown below).
On March 31st, 2010. 4chan founder Christopher Poole temporarily changed the name of the /v/ (video games) board to “Babby,” set the background image to the chubby baby photograph and looped the 2009 K-pop song “Gee” by Girls’ Generation in the background.
On April 3rd, 2010, YouTuber MZD uploaded a video featuring the Babby photograph accompanied by the Girls’ Generation song “Gee” (shown below).
On August 24th, FunnyJunk user braaaf submitted a picture of the lead singer of the rock band Nickelback holding the Babby photo, receiving more than 22,000 views and 560 up votes in the next four years (shown below). On November 10th, the Fuck Yeah Babby Tumblr blog was launched, which highlights notable Babby photoshopped pictures.
On July 13th, 2011, FunnyJunk user tgi posted a compilation of Babby photoshop examples. On October 28th, 2012, Redditor AlmostGaryBusey submitted a photoshopped picture of Grafics Cat superimposed over Babby’s face to the /r/WTF subreddit, where it gained over 1,800 up votes and 60 comments prior to being archived (shown below, left). On January 17th, 2013, a photoshopped picture of actor Danny Devito combined with Babby was posted in a /a/ (anime & manga) board thread on 4chan (shown below, right).
