About

The Cat Daddy is a dance created in 2010 by the hip-hop group Rej3ctz, which involves moving one's hands as if they are turning the wheels of a wheelchair. The Cat Daddy is often performed along with another dance known as the "Dougie."

Origin

On July 7th, 2010, the Rej3ctz released the song "Cat Daddy"[1] (shown left) as a bonus track off their album TheFUNKtionon. On August 6th, 2010, the earliest known dance video (shown right) was uploaded to YouTube by user shutyoazzup09, which featured two young girls performing the dance.

Precursor: Dougie

The Cat Daddy is an extension of the "Dougie," a shimmy-style hip-hop dance started when rapper Lil' Wil from Dallas, Texas released his song "My Dougie" (shown left) in late 2007. In April of 2010, the dance was further popularized with the release of the song "Teach Me How to Dougie" (shown right) by the hip-hop group Cali Swag District.

On November 24th, 2010, a video montage of the pop star Justin Bieber performing the Cat Daddy was uploaded to YouTube by user belieberSQUARED (shown left). On January 3rd, 2011, the female dance crew The Gogos uploaded a video of themselves doing the Cat Daddy (shown right).



On January 3rd, 2011, the first Urban Dictionary[2] definition for "Cat Daddy" was submitted by user LesterDG, who compared the dance moves to moving the wheels of a wheelchair. On February 10th, The Rej3ctz recorded an instructional video for performing the Cat Daddy during an appearance on the hip-hop radio show "The Mando Show."



On February 16th, the song "Cat Daddy" was released for sale on the iTunes[3] music store for $1.29. As of May 2nd, 2012, a Facebook[6] page for "Cat Daddy" has received over 18,000 likes.

Kate Upton Dance

On May 1st, 2012, fashion photographer Terry Richardson[11] uploaded a video to YouTube titled "Kate Upton โ€“ Cat Daddy", which featured the American model Kate Upton performing the dance in a red bikini. The same day, the video reached the front page of the /r/videos[4] subreddit in a post by user fuckhitler titled "Kate Upton demonstrates the 'cat daddy'", which received over 15,600 up votes in 24 hours.



Also on May 1st, the video was covered by several news media outlets including The Huffington Post[7], The Gothamist[9] and the New York Post.[10] The following day, The Daily Beast[8] published an article titled "We Screwed Up by Banning Kate Upton โ€˜Cat Daddyโ€™ Dancing Video", which reported that YouTube had briefly removed the video for violating the site's community guidelines, only to reinstate it in less than 24 hours.
