On July 2011 the car manufacturer Nissan aired in Brazil a TV ad of a car (NISSAN FRONTIER) basically the guy bought a car that had “ponys” instead of “horsepower”.. it wasn’t strong enough! He swears at the ponys when he kicks the car, something like: “DAMN YOU, PONYS”! Pink ponys appear from inside the car and start singing a song to make fun of him.
At the end of the video the poney turn out to be diabolic and talk about “The pony curse”, you must send the video to ten friends, otherwise the song will stick to you brain forever!
Translated Version(turn annotations on)
The original video quickly went viral and has to date 5.6 Million views.
My Little Pony Resemblance
Many watchers pointed out that the ponys used on the video have a clear resemblance with the first generation of the cartoon “My Little Pony”. Since the show was aired more than 15 years ago the watchers have today about 25-30 years old, witch was about the average age the commercial was aimed at.
The “pony curse” also reached the brasilian dubbing versions of the cartoon on youtube, with many users spamming “Pôneis Malditos!” (Damn Ponys) on the comments section of those videos.
Since was aired on tv (without the last part of the internet video) the commercial received criticism by many people concerning the use of childrem-like characters and the use of swearing on public tv. Conar, the national publicity regulamentaion department investigated the case, but didn’t banned the video.
The catchy song as well as the idea of the “pony curse” quickly spreaded trough Brazilian forums, blogs and youtubbers as well creating many remixes.
