The Doom Series (Japanese: 人類滅亡シリーズ, Jinrui Metsubou Series) refer to a style of Japanese MAD videos featuring a CGI animation of an impact event on planet Earth.
The source footage for this series is a scene of the 500km wide meteorite impact from Miracle Planet, a TV program aired between 2004 and 2005 (shown below, left). The earliest MAD video featuring this asteroid collision was posted by MAD creator “checkit014” (チェキ14歳) to his website around February 2007 (shown below, right). This was a part of his parody video series on MMORPG Ragnarok Online.
According to Nico Nico Pedia, the first “Doom Series” video was posted to the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND) on August 10th, 2008, titled “Doom by Ichiro Laser Beam” (イチローのレーザービームで人類滅亡, Ichiro No Laser Beam De Jinrui Metsubou). This is also the origin of MAD series for Ichiro Laser Beam.
The zany BGM heard in both videos above is “Bon Mawari” (盆周り), which is well-known for being featured on “It’s 8. All hands on stage” (8時だｮ! 全員集合, Hachiji Dayo! Zenin Shugo), a popular Japanese comedy show from the 70’s. The Doom Series was made by only citing the latter part of this video entirely.
Other MAD creators began imitating this video with the word “Doom by X”(Xで人類滅亡) in the title. Because of its quite convenient edit-style, most “Doom Series” videos found online are made by NND users who don’t have creative mind. Most of Doom Series videos use template that is posted to YouTube, and its creators are only combining it with anything they like. As of December 2012, the number of “Doom Series” videos on NND is over 3000, and they are also uploaded to YouTube.
