Girls That Looks Like Skrillex (GTLLS) is a single topic blog featuring photographs of women with one side of their head shaved in a style reminiscent of the electronic music producer Skrillex.

Origin

The Tumblr blog “Girls That Look Like Skrillex”[1] was launched on April 2nd, 2011, with the first post calling for viewers to submit photos of women with Skrillex’ hair style. The same day, four photos were published of women with one side of their head shaved.



Precursor

The trend of opposite gender lookalike blogs began with the “Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber”[12] blog launched on March 2nd, 2010. The posts featured photographs of women with short side-swept hair-styles resembling pop star Justin Bieber, mocking the subject’s androgyny. As of June 27th, 2012, the blog has published a total of 1,794 posts.



Spread

On April 4th, 2011, the GTLLS Tumblr was linked in a thread on the electronic music forum Plur Life[7], where several members replied with additional photos from the blog. The same day, Skrillex posted a link to the Tumblr via his official Twitter[11] account (shown below).



On October 24th, LA Weekly[10] published a post titled “Top Five Girls Who Look Like Skrillex”, listing several notable women who wore the undershave hairstyle. On November 8th, YouTuber ElectricValentineVid uploaded a music video titled “You Got Skrillex Hair”, featuring lyrical references to men rejecting women for wearing the undershave hair-style.



On December 20th, BodyBuilding Forums[4] member ShortStacks submitted a post titled “Girls that Look Like Skrillex (I dont even)”, which received over 40 replies within 24 hours.
On January 2nd, 2012, the pop culture blog Stuiff You Will Hate[8] published a post criticizing the trendy hair-style and referred to the women as “hipster trash.” On January 7th, a compilation of notable photos from the GTLLS blog were published on the Internet humor site The Chive.[9] On January 10th, the “Girls That Look Like Skrillex” Facebook[5] page was launched.



On February 11th, the YouTuber Noisey uploaded a video titled “Girls That Look Like Skrillex” (shown above), which featured several people discussing the GTLLS and “Cooking With Skrillex” blogs. On February 15th, Redditor BrianTheLady submitted the Tumblr to the /r/Skrillex[3] subreddit in a post titled “Girls That Look Like Skrillex: one of the best tumblrs ive seen.”
