On August 25, 2008, Google added a feature to their search box that offers searches similar to the one you’re typing. This feature works in real-time, so unfinished searches bring up different results. Given this new feature and the realative ignorance of the general public, it came as no surprise when the suggestion box started to display odd queries.

Similar to Make Your Own Album Cover, Search Box Suggestions is not a meme that is posted on forums or made into Youtube videos. It’s more like a game you play when you’re bored. You go to Google and type in unfinished phrases, like: “Why is there” and “Why cant I” and see what comes up. You’re bound to find something really strange sooner or later. People also enter searches in hopes of the spell check to display another funny result. (ex: someone types in “three gay fags” google says, “Did You Mean: the Jonas Brothers?”) While mainly for the enjoyment of the individual, many blogs and websites post their top list of funny Google searches.
