About

Hank Hill Listens to X is a series of YouTube videos showing Hank Hill from the animated TV series King of the Hill listening to music on headphones, reacting with a horrified and baffled expression. In the videos, the music Hank listens to is altered to various genres.

Origin

The original clip comes from the first episode of the series, broadcast January 12th, 1997.[5] In the original episode, Bobby and Hank are listening to a comedy CD full of fart sound effects (shown below).

The first video of this kind was most likely "Hank Hill listens to fart sounds while I play unfitting music" by FlamezV2, uploaded May 22nd, 2009, based on the popular meme Unfitting Music.

Spread

Over the course of the 2010s, the scene has been used in myriad ways, often showing Hank listening to modern music he finds strange or traumatizing, a la the Binky Listens To meme. In 2011, YouTuber doku posted an edit showing Hank listening to Dubstep, gaining over 6.8 million views (shown below, left). On October 13th, 2012, YouTuber rabbidalienghost posted an example featuring Death Grips, gaining over 151,000 views (shown below, right).

Examples of the meme have tended to correspond to genres that are popular in memes at the time they are posted. For example, on November 9th, 2015, YouTuber Zoso98 uploaded a Vaporwave example, gaining over 199,000 views (shown below, left). On March 20th, 2019, YouTuber Mei Muumi uploaded an example of Hank Hill listening to The Caretaker, gaining over 172,000 views (shown below, right).

Although the meme has stayed mainly on YouTube, a few YTMND page's have been made based on the meme as well.[2][3][4]
