Leekspin / Loituma Girl

added Jan 01, 2009 at 05:39PM UTC

Leekspin, or Loituma Girl, dates back to 2006 as a looping animation of the character Orihime from the anime Bleach spinning a leek, set to an audio loop from the traditional Finnish folk song levan Polkka, as played by the band Loituma.

Leekspin represents an interesting cross-section of Japanophilia and… well… polka.

Although Leekspin and Loituma emerged onto the Internet within months of eachother, Loituma’s popularity in Finland, Sweden, and Norway far outweighs the popularity of the Leekspin image.

Never got why this is so wildly popular.
It’s… just kinda annoying, in a wierd, mesmerizing way.

Like it pisses you off, but you don’t wanna stop watching, and it pisses you off more.

This apparently evolved into leekwave (featuring Miku Hatsune) on the Japanese intarwebs. That probably merits a mention, especially as it actually spawned official action figures of Miku with leek accessory.

Leekwave itself is too small for its own entry, but has been directly attached to Hatsune Miku and that was mention in the Miku article.

It’s Ievan polkka, not Levan polkka. Someone has messed up the name of the song.

Not a bit of NSFW here Watcher, but it is a great parody of the “what is love” sketch from Saturday Night live.
