About

Me Gusta is a rage comic face that is typically used to respond to an awkward or disgusting event with “Me Gusta,” which means “it pleases me” in Spanish (often understood as “I like it” in English). It was originally only used in sexually perverse contexts, but has broadened over time to include a more general disturbing enjoyment. (See also Sweet Jesus Face)

Origin

In a Reddit thread on March 8th, 2011, user “Insert” claimed to have drawn the original Me Gusta face, and subsequently posted it to 4chan.^[1] He went on to do an “ask me anything” thread^[2] that same day, and he cited a Tumblr post^[3] and Deviant Art^[4] page as evidence that he was the original creator.

Spread

The first comic on Reddit^[5] was posted on March 18, 2010 by Redditor “me_gusta”. In a comment he claims he discovered the image on 4chan before posting it to Reddit.^[6]

It is currently ranked in the “Fuck Yeah” tier on Memegenerator ^[7], and can often be found on Tumblr ^[8], Memebase ^[9] and in Reddit’s popular F7U12 subreddit ^[10].

Search queries for “me gusta face” began to pick up in December of 2010, and have continued to rise in the United States.
