About

Sad Toy Cats is the title of a CGI animation video featuring several cats and a text-to-speech voiceover that repeatedly sings the phrase "meow meow I am a cat."

Origin

On August 11th, 2010, YouTuber wendyvainity uploaded a video titled “Meow! Sad Toy Cats.wmv," starring a variety of computer animated cats rendered in the Daz Studio[5] animation software and accompanied by a text-to-speech voice repeating the phrase “meow meow I am a cat” (shown below). Within the next three years, the video received over 480,000 views and 3,700 comments.



Spread

On October 20th, 2010, YouTuber mas1978us uploaded an electronic remix of the Sad Toy Cats video (shown below, left), accumulating more than 1,300 views and 7 comments in the following three years. On March 18th, 2011, YouTuber commandercortez uploaded a Sad Toy Cats dubstep remix (shown below, right), receiving over 1,200 views and 10 comments in the next two years.

On November 26th, 2012, YouTuber wendyvainity uploaded a video featuring a computer animated cat-human hybrid surrounded by cats set to the same background music (shown below, left). Within four months, the video received upwards of 100,000 views and 650 comments. On January 3rd, 2013, the original wendyvainity video was reposted to the Facepunch Forums[4] by member overpain. On the next day, wendyvainity uploaded a video titled “Bowow, Sad Toy Dogs,” featuring computer animated dogs accompanied by a similar text-to-speech voice singing “Bowow bowow I am a dog” (shown below, right). In the following month, the video gained over 70,000 views and 580 comments.



On January 6th, YouTuber TehN1ppe uploaded a 10-hour loop of wendyvainity's original upload (shown below, left), garnering more than 44,000 views and 450 comments in the following three months.
