About

deviantART is a popular online community based around user submitted art. It was founded by Scott Jarkoff, Matthew Stephens, Angelo Sotira and others. Users of the website post in various categories including digital art, photography, traditional art, film and animation, cartoons, manga, flash animation, and literature.

History

The site was originally launched on August 7, 2000, and was part of network of music-related websites called the Dmusic Network, it was first based on application-skin websites, but it was later changed to focus on artists and their creations. The most recent update, version 7, was launched on May 18th, 2010.

Mascot

The deviantART mascot is a robot cat named “Fella”. According to the #fella[6] deviantART page, the character was posted by user ‘switched[7] on April 29th, 2001, and subsequently won deviantART’s 2001 Mascot contest. (See also: Website Anthropomorphism)

Reception

According to deviantART co-founder Angelo Sotira, the site had over 14.5 million members, 100 million total submissions, and roughly 140,000 submissions every day as of August, 2010.[1]

It holds a Compete[3] rank of 344, a Quantcast[2] United States score of 97, and is the no. 121 in the entire world on the Alexa[4] scale as of July 1st, 2011.

Derivatives

Art fads are popular amongst deviantART users, and often consist of a picture within set constraints, such as a character they’ve made in a specific style, age or pose like Nyu’s Art Meme, Sparkledogs, and the DeviantArt Age Meme. They often use templates to express parts of their characters that would otherwise be unseen. There is even a group on deviantART dedicated to these called “Meme Station”.[5]

Emoticon fads, such as Pyong or Lick Icons, can commonly be found on the site.

The Trollface itself originated upon DeviantART. That alone is probably enough to merit DeviantART a place in the annals of KYM.
If not, just look through all the others that started on DA. It’s undeniable.
+1 confirm.
