About

Smug Wendy's, also known as Wendy-chan, is an anime-style anthropomorphic personification of the @Wendys Twitter feed, which gained much online notoriety for its funny and sarcastic responses to customer complaints and questions. The character is based on the restaurant's mascot Wendy Thomas.

Origin

In 2012, Wendy’s VP of Advertising, Brandon Rhtoen hired Amy Brown to run Wendy’s social media accounts. According to an interview with Mashable,[6] Rhoten hired her to be a “challenger with charm…the intent of the social media team is to represent the brand’s voice as best as they can. When folks say, ‘roast me,’ we’re going to have fun with that.” The Twitter account went viral in 2017 after an infamous interaction with a disgruntled customer who took issue with their slogan “fresh, never frozen,” leading to media coverage and praise from other Twitter users. In March of that year, Brown left the Wendy’s corporation and resigned as their social media manager, but the feed continued to post tweets in a similar playful voice (shown below).

For better or for worse (for better because we might get more funny bullshit, for worse because it'll probably all just be cancerous, low-quality imitations) I really do think that shitposting is future of marketing.

People who don't live in the US probably won't know this, but Wendy's has always had cutting-edge marketing. The fabled "Where's the beef?" commercial, which seems quaint by today's standards, was actually revolutionary at the time, bringing a certain capricious sense of humor to advertising. In America, it attained the ever-envied status of the meatspace meme, not at all unlike the comedy of Monty Python.

Wendy's shitposting seems to be well-received, and seems quite sincere and unaffected in its insincere irreverence (if that makes sense). It's successfully engaging the emerging internet subcultures with its messages. There is no way this will go unnoticed by other companies, and there is no way that when they notice it they won't try to imitate it.

In short: Witty Funposting is the new Super Bowl commerical. Smug anime girls optional but recommended.
