OFF is a French horror RPG developed by Mortis Ghost in 2008. The game accrued a considerable fanbase following an English translation released in 2011. An English version 2.0 is downloadable for free here
“The Batter”, a man of unknown origin dressed in baseball attire, starts his quest to “purify the world”. Guiding him are “The Judge”, a cat with impeccable speech and wisdom, and Zacharie, an omnipresent shopkeep whose upbeat disposition irks The Batter to no end. The Batter’s only companions in battle are Add-ons. Spherical non-sentient floating items that follow his command. These are named Alpha, Omega, and Epsilon. They serve no purpose but to aid the Batter in battles.
The game takes place in a surreal world(?) known as the Nothingness. In the Nothingness, five zones are available for the player to unlock and explore. These are Zone 0, Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3, and the Room. Zones 1-3 are kept safe from Spectres by guardians. These are Dedan, Japhet, and Enoch respectively.
Critics of the game adore it for its unique, bizarre premise and ‘off’-putting atmosphere. Being a retro-esque RPG, it has been likened to Earthbound and other pixelated RPGs that are known to be ‘weird.’
Multiple fanart has spawned from Tumblr and Deviantart. The characters the Batter and Zacharie is popularly shipped. Sucre/Sugar, a hidden boss in the game, has become a fan favorite as well as the three guardians of the zones.
It is implied several times throughout OFF that there may or may not be a sequel. As of May 27th, 2014, a fan-made sequel to OFF, called “”http://rpgmaker.net/games/6361/“>HOME”, started development. Its creator, nicknamed TheJudge, has received permission to go ahead with the game. A playable demo is currently available through the link above.
