About
The Trumps Meet Pope Francis refers to an image of Pope Francis looking miserable standing next to president Donald Trump and his family. The Pope's expression prompted jokes on Twitter the day of the photograph's publication.
Origin
On May 24th, the Trump family visited Pope Francis in the Vatican. The visit came after a history of Pope Francis and Donald Trump disagreeing on several issues, including global warming and immigration. After what has been reported as a reasonably friendly visit,[1] the Pope posed for a photo op with the Trump family. In the picture, he is seen looking unhappy while Trump has a big grin, leading Twitter users to interpret the photo to mean the Pope was miserable in jokes about the photo (shown below).
Spread
The picture instantly became a target of mockery online as users quickly picked up on the Pope's expression, particularly when compared to how the Pope looked in comparison when he met with Barack Obama. Twitter user Charla_04[2] tweeted one of the earliest comparisons, gaining over 300 retweets and 600 likes (shown below).
The jokes continued to spread through Twitter that day, prompting articles from The Huffington Post,[1] Select All,[3] Gizmodo,[4] and many more.
