"Surreal memes were always a part of the memescape, representing one of the extreme tendencies of contemporary meme manufacture: the nihilistically-tinged dive towards an increasingly illogical, referentless and abstract memeticism. Visually characterized by aggressive deep frying, bold color palettes and strange typography, surreal memes found a constituency in many places, including Reddit's /r/surrealmemes. Linguistically, surreal memes take part in a campaign to shatter language, often omitting grammatically important sentence components or creating utterances which fail to scan. Often, surreal memes attribute this inscrutability to an abstract and arbitrary authority, which orders the poster and viewer around -- perhaps an oblique commentary on the increasingly surreal and opaque actions of 21st-century political institutions such as the nation-state and social media platform."
