One of the blessings of living in the online age is access to the full range of emoji. Who needs reading comprehension when you can look at brightly colored pictures instead? Sometimes though, their range of expression doesn't go quite as far as we need it to. However, that’s nothing a little dubious photoshopping can’t work out — which is exactly where cursed emojis come into play.

An exercise in polite denial, it has captured the imaginations of many as the perfect response to any information they do not welcome in their lives. In the space of a year, this one simple reaction image has blossomed into a series with its own surreal memetic logic, one expressing a range of complex emotions.
