During the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on March 27th, 2022, comedian Chris Rock was presenting the award for best documentary feature, which eventually went to Summer of Soul. While on stage, Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith's wife and star of entanglement controversy, which prompted Will to come down to the center stage and proceed to slap Chris Rock before returning to his seat while hurling profanities at him. Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, and the comedian referenced her bald head in a joke about "G. I. Jane 2," which sparked some outrage, but not nearly as much as the frustrations we all now share regarding Will Smith himself. Chris Rock, fortunately, did not respond in the same manner as Smith, and the award show proceeded as scheduled. The creatives at 4chan took a special interest in the slap, and reduced it down to an easily modifiable meme template similar to Lev Punch, allowing for the creativity to flow and hundreds of memes to be made.
