Where Did The 'August 12 2036, The Heat Death Of The Universe' Meme Come From?

Last week, on June 3rd, 2023, the ai_sponge livestream was playing its regularly scheduled programming, panning between SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward talking to each other outside their 3d-rendered homes.

The Squidward character, who many within the fanbase refer to as "Loudward," all of a sudden started repeating, "August 12 2036. The heat death of the universe. August 12 2036. The heat death of the universe." Immediately within the livestream's chat, users began spamming the phrase.

Soon after Loudward's objectively insane rant, the date was referenced in memes that hyped up the imagined apocalypse. Additionally, Loudward's speech was prime for copypasta exploitation.

What Is 'ai_sponge?'

Back in March of this year, ai_sponge launched on Twitch. It's a parody of the famous cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants that's entirely generated by artificial intelligence. To generate the characters' dialogue, it uses ChatGPT. To generate the characters' voices, it uses AI voice programs. Plus, ai_sponge runs 24/7, meaning that anyone can tune in whenever to witness a completely original and randomly generated moment like "August 12 2036, the heat death of the universe," among other classics.
