The new slang term among TikTok and Twitter / X users is "Crash Out." Often written "crashout," the word has quickly become oversaturated, infuriating some of its earliest adopters.

Spamming "crash out" in a comment section is kind of the new thing right now. It's easy to forget where this AAVE slang term came from. In fact, most people don't know. Let's explain its meaning and origin.

What Does 'Crash Out' Mean?

The slang term "crash out" means to lose control and freak out. If someone's "crashing out" it means that they've been broken to the point of an outburst. In most contexts, "crashing out" also involves heavy consequences like incarceration.

"Crash out" is also commonly used as a noun. To call someone a "crashout" means that they're a reckless person who over-reacts violently about non-issues. For some, being a crashout is cool. To others, it's just silly and unnecessary.

Where Does 'Crash Out' Come From?

On Urban Dictionary and elsewhere, it's said that "crash out" was first used in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This checks out with the rap game's first adopter of the term, NBA YoungBoy, a Baton Rouge native. He's used the slang in early songs like "Stepped On" from 2017.

One of the main reasons why "crash out" has gained mass usage in 2024 is because of an Atlanta rapper named Baby Kia who went viral this month for his song "OD CRASHIN." Kia has since become the face of "crash out," inspiring a viral TikTok trend with the word.

Crash Out Usage In Memes

Memetic usage of "crash out" has (no doubt) peaked in the early 2020s. Its popular usage mostly started late last year via viral tweets that namedropped. During the same timeframe, its usage spread on TikTok.

Now, in 2024, saying "crash out" is getting labeled cringe, mostly by Black creators who're saying it's gotten "gentrified" It's no doubt the new buzzword for kiddies who've been obsessed with "rizz" and "gyatt" for the past year, evident in viral comment sections that have gotten ridiculed elsewhere.

How do you use "X" in a sentence?

  • "If Jack fails that test he's gonna crash out."
  • "I wish she wasn't such a crash out because she's so chill otherwise."
  • "I'm only a crash out when my inner hater shines through."
