The meme "This Shit Is So Ass" has become a go-to catchphrase and reaction image on social media this year, being mostly used to express one's discontent with various forms of media, especially anime and video games.

The viral panel emerged from a specific moment in the Oshi no Ko manga and quickly gained traction on social media platforms.

So what's the deal with the "This Shit Is So Ass" meme? Let’s dive into where this meme came from and how it became one of the anime community's favorite reaction images.

Where Is The 'This Shit Is So Ass' Meme From?

The meme originates from Oshi no Ko chapter 152, which was released on June 12, 2024, in Weekly Young Jump magazine. In this chapter, the character Akane is seen crying while watching a documentary about one of the main characters, with an inner dialogue saying, "However, these tears are surely neither of those."

On the same day, X user @BennoSubs shared an edited panel of that same scene, replacing Akane's heartfelt monologue with the phrase, “This shit is so ass,” completely changing the original context and setting the stage for the meme's rise.

It took just a month for the meme to be heavily used as a reaction image by other manga fandoms to vent their frustrations about the current quality of shows, games and mangas. One of the first viral uses came from @zeekrino, who used it to criticize Valorant.

On August 6th, 2024, Redditor u/4omine posted the reaction image to criticize the Animated Justice League War Film.
