About

Oshi No Ko (Japanese:【推しの子】) is a Japanese manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. The manga has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump since April 2020, and an anime adaptation produced by Doga Kobo premiered in April 2023.

Plot

Oshi No Ko follows the story[1] of a doctor and his recently-deceased patient who are reborn as twins to a famous Japanese musical idol and have to navigate the highs and lows of the Japanese entertainment industry as they grow up together.

History

Oshi No Ko[2] was first published on April 23rd, 2020, by Shueisha's[3] seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump.[4] As of April 14th, 2023, eleven volumes have been released.

2023 Anime Adaptation

On June 9th, 2022, an anime adaptation of Oshi No Ko was announced by Twitter[5] user @WSJ_manga, which also revealed a key visual, garnering 7,338 likes and 2,543 retweets in a year (seen below).

The cast, staff and production of the anime[6] were announced on the same day, with Daisuke Hiramaki as director, Saori Tachibana as assistant director, Jin Tanaka supervising the scripts and Kanna Hirayama doing the character design. Doga Kobo is the animation production company responsible for the adaptation.

Reception

Oshi No Ko had over 3 million copies[9] in circulation By October 2022, receiving awards and being ranked on several manga lists in Japan. For instance, in August 2021, the manga won the Next Manga Award[10] in the print category.

Fandom

On April 2nd, 2020, the Oshi no Ko Wiki[7] was created, garnering over 291 articles over the next three years. The /r/OshiNoKo[8] subreddit was launched on the same day as the Wiki, enabling discussions about the manga series.

Since the manga premiered on April 2020, many pieces of fan art inspired by the series have been shared on art-sharing community sites. A Facebook[11] group was created on May 7th, 2022, accumulating 6,700 fans in a year. The online artist community DeviantART has a number of fan artworks of the manga (see some examples below).

The anime of the series was well received by the fans who went to Twitter to praise the anime's first episode. For example, Twitter[12] user @kagukana praised the studio's work with the eyes of the characters. The tweet (seen below), uploaded on April 14th, 2023, garnered 1,945 likes and 341 retweets in a day.

Honestly, I think it would be better if the series didn't had the reincarnation part, it seems pretty redundant and the premise would still be the same without it.
In fact, it could probably be better because the protags would have been born from an idol and have to live and learn everything from scratch.
