POGGERS, sometimes referred to as Pog, is one of many popular Twitch emotes commonly used on the platform. This facial expression is often associated with scenarios where people are excited during streams, or when something extraordinary happens. Like MonkaS, this is another Twitch emote that uses Pepe the Frog, a prominent character in meme culture.

But what does Poggers mean? And what is its significance in meme culture? Here's everything you need to know.

What Does Poggers Mean?

Urban Dictionary user Seltz describes Poggers as "an expression of extreme excitement or hype" (shown below). While it is primarily used as an emote, the word itself has seen some use as an adjective, or when describing something incredibly cool or exciting. Phrases like "That was Poggers" or "That sounds pog!" have been thrown around on message boards like 4chan and Reddit, alongside Twitch chat.

The emote itself is a variation on another emote, called PogChamp, which is an image of popular Twitch streamer Gootecks with his mouth wide open.

Who Is Gootecks?

Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez is a professional Street Fighter streamer who has been on the platform for over a decade now. On November 26th, 2010, an outtake was uploaded to YouTube of a video where Ryan was seen making an exaggerated face with his mouth wide open (shown below).

After the release of this video, the emote PogChamp was born. PogChamp is considered to be one of the oldest emotes on Twitch, and many derivates of the emote were created of the original, such as PogU, My LittlePogChamp and Poggers.

How Is Poggers Used In Memes?

Primarily used as a Twitch emote, it has been featured on over 160,000 Twitch channels as of October 2020. But since then, the emote has been used extensively outside of Twitch in various unfitting situations. On July 15th, 2018 Twitter user @cawayee posted a viral tweet about a guy replying to a nude she sent him with "Poggers" (shown below).

The usage of the expression was also featured in various thumbnails and YouTube videos, often explaining that a person is extremely excited about a specific type of content (example shown below). On May 11th, 2020, the use of Poggers in memes was banned on Reddit's /r/okbuddyretard because of how prevalent it became.
