About

PogU is a FrankerFaceZ extension Twitch Emote featuring an image of video game personality Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez. In 2018, the custom emote gained popularity on the streaming platform as a way to express excitement.

Origin

On November 26th, 2010, entertainment network Cross Counter TV released a blooper reel featuring hosts Gootecks and Mike Ross. In one of the outtakes, Gootecks reacts to the operator stumbling off-camera with an expression of mixed excitement and surprise.

On June 3, 2018, custom Twitch emote website FrankerFaceZ user Amiccuz submitted PogU emote[1]. The emote featured still image of Gootecks facing the camera while making the expression. The name of the emote referred to PogChamp, a popular official Twitch emote originating from the same video.

Spread

On June 4, the Amiccuz made a Reddit [2] post promoting the emote on /r/forsen subreddit. In the comments, several Redditors praised the emote, with some users calling to make it "meta". The post gained over 260 upvotes within six months. On June 14, 2018, the PogU emote was banned from Forsen's Twitch chat.[3]

In the summer 2018, the emote rose to popularity across various Twitch channels, including pokelawls[4] and xQc[5].
