What’s With Memes About 'Catturd' Running Over His Dog? Jokes About The Twitter User's Dog 'Smiles' Explained

It should be a given that if you willingly admit to something tragic online, the internet will never let you live it down. That's basically what's happening to a Twitter / X poster named Catturd right now.
Beloved by many right-wing posters and loathed by the other end of the political spectrum, the Twitter user had announced that he accidentally ran over his dog, named "Smiles," with his pickup truck back in March 2024.

Several of his followers expressed their condolences to the oddly named user, but others cracked jokes at his (and Smile's) expense, and Catturd's posting history about his other dogs' ailments didn't help his case.
If you feel left out after seeing people dredge up the story in recent weeks, here's a recap of the "Catturd Running Over His Dog" story and memes.
Who is Catturd, and How Did the Internet Find Out About the Death of his Dog?
Catturd is a right-wing Twitter poster with a cartoon cat avatar, a verified badge and a loyal following of many culture war soldiers. He's best known for being a ride-or-die for both Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, both of whom have regularly amplified and retweeted his content in recent years.

On March 20th, 2024, he tweeted that Smiles, his 15-year-old dog, had died "a few hours ago" after a tragic accident involving his pickup truck.
In a lengthy post, Catturd describes riding around with his dogs Smiles and Pedro before letting them out of his car to run to his back gate. He says that he stepped out of the vehicle after feeling something hit his rear, only to see Smiles take a few steps and collapse "pretty much instantly."

To make matters worse, Catturd later posted a tweet "signing off" for the day, and saying that he was "crushed" by Smiles' death — unfortunate phrasing that every Catturd hater immediately cringed at.
How Did Catturd’s Followers React to His Dog’s Death?
Many of Catturd's fans responded with sincerity, offering prayers, photos and puppy-eyed empathy.
On March 20th, Twitter user @BasedSavannah tweeted "I’m crying for you…" along with a picture of Smiles, racking up over 2,800 likes. Another user, @Jules31415, declared, with no intended humor, "He's giving us all the side-eye from Heaven now," which earned over 5,200 likes.

How Did Other Internet Users React to Catturd Killing His Dog?
Elsewhere on the timeline, reactions skewed dark and snarky. One viral tweet compared Catturd to the infamous tsar of Russia, Ivan the Terrible, calling him a "fat re----" who carelessly pancaked his pup. Another user simply wrote, "You can't run over your dog and tweet 'I’m just so crushed.' Come on now."

Critics also resurfaced screenshots of Catturd's long history of pet emergencies: Smiles bleeding from his mouth, Petey facing snake bites, Pedro suffering from a cut on his chest and Wiggles getting "clipped" by a car.
As it turns out, Catturd runs a sort of informal dog rescue and regularly takes in abandoned dogs. X user @reaghanhb shared his tweets about his dogs' various injuries, writing, "please stop giving this man dogs."

When Catturd tried to weigh in on the Baltimore Bridge Collapse six days later, claiming it "definitely looks deliberate," one user clapped back and said, "Amazing insight from someone who just ran over his own dog."
